Bebop The Bluebird Has Flown South For The Winter

The first graders have had a great fall with our musical friend Bebop the bluebird. He has just flown south for the winter. We miss him already, but he will be back again in the spring. He will be ready to listen to the first graders singing sweetly to him then...

Dear Fourth Grade Parents and Caregivers,

This year, fourth graders at Floral Street School will be studying the recorder as part of their music curriculum. This program has, in the past, been very successful in the Shrewsbury Public Schools and we are looking forward to another very fun and musical year ahead!

The recorder is a wind instrument that looks and sounds like an early flute. It is made of wood or plastic and played very much like a clarinet.

Each week a portion of your child’s general music class at school will be dedicated to learning the recorder.  We are asking that all children participate in this program at an individual cost of $7.00.  This way the students will have their own personal recorder, which they can take home to practice and keep at the end of the year.

We realize the cost of the program may be prohibitive for some families.  We would ask that you contact Mrs. DeBlois, Mrs. McCubrey, or Mrs. Ostrander if this is a concern.

If there are students that already own a recorder, it may be used for this program. Sheet music will be provided to each fourth grade student.

We would like to begin this program at the beginning of October.  In order to do this, we are asking that you return the bottom portion of this letter with your payment, if applicable, to the music room by Monday, September 22, 2014.  Please make any checks payable to Floral Street School.

Thank you so much for your support.  If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. DeBlois at Floral Street School (508-841-8300 ext. 4932) or by e-mail at tdeblois@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Tracy DeBlois

Welcome Back!

Hi everyone!

I hope that you had some fun this summer and are ready to come back to Music with a smile!

Some news for you all...Mrs. Demarky Anderson has indeed retired and in her place we have a new music teacher,  Miss Hall. She will be teaching a few of the first and second grade music classes and will be co-teaching the Fourth Grade Choruses with me. I like her so much already. I know that you will give her a big Floral Street smile when you meet her in the hallways of our school.

Welcome back! Let's make it a great and musical year...

Love,
Mrs. D.

It's Here!!!

The new piano has arrived! For those of you that didn't know, our 16 year old keyboard badly needed to be replaced. With the help of the Music and Drama Department Director, Bonnie Narcisi, and the Shrewsbury School Music Association, we were able to purchase a new keyboard for Floral Street School this year.

We are so thankful and excited to make some music…

Happy MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS Month!!!

String Things!

We were so happy to have another visitor to the Music Room today!
Mrs. Kaye joined us with her violin and her viola. She talked to us about stringed instruments and played us some beautiful music, as well.

She taught us how to stand and hold the violin.

We had a great time learning about strings!

THANK YOU,  MRS. KAYE!!!

Another Visitor to the Music Room...

We had another treat in the Music Room last week. Mr. Nicholas Andreano, former student at Floral Street School came back to talk to the fourth graders about the saxophones in the woodwind. He even brought one in for kids to look at, up close and personal!

It was great to see Nick, who is attending Townson University in Maryland and majoring in Music. We want to thank him for sharing his skills and knowledge with us, even though he was on vacation! : )

Who's That Instrumentalist in the Music Room??

It's Mr. Ron Kaye! He is the father of former FSS student, Andrew Kaye, who is now in eighth grade. He is also the father of Erin and Steven Kaye, who are both in first grade this year.

Mr. Kaye is a very talented musician. He plays both the Oboe and the English Horn in orchestras and ensembles all around the New England area. He leads workshops for woodwind players and is a teacher at the middle and high school level in the Shrewsbury After School Instrumental Lesson Program, as well.

He was gracious enough to spend some of his time with us in the music room this past week. He shared lots of information about instruments of the orchestra and composers with the third graders and also gave us a treat - he played some music for us on both the Oboe and the English Horn! It was wonderful. We appreciate him taking time out of his busy schedule to come in and inspire us.

Happy 2014!!!!

2014 is here, and the Music Room is hopping!

We have just begun our Instruments of the Orchestra Unit, which will run through February. It is a very exciting time of year for us...We'll be listening to the story of the Classical Cats, learning about the job of the conductor, and classifying instruments into their family groups. (Can YOU name the four families of instruments in the orchestra?!)

There are a few new things going up under "links" on the right hand side of this page, in case you are looking for them. For example, we just played the Instrument Music Match game today! Check out the Musical Safari for a fun trip through the orchestral instruments with Violet and her Uncle. There's also a clip of a contrabassoon, for all of you woodwind fans out there! Enjoy!

Wishing you all a musical New Year...
Mrs. DeBlois and Mrs. Demarky Anderson
